I'd like to see an update of FW97 too. But I don't buy FinalOffice CD. If
there is an update of FW97 I'd buy the FinalOffice2.0 CD. Is there a site
whre I can vote for FinalOffice2.0 CD?

That isn't the way it works. You "vote" by buying the FinalOffice1.0 CD. But
I don't know if you can buy it now or not. You could try contacting
SoftPartners. They have a postal address and a phone number on their webpage
at http://www.softpartners.com on the contact page. They apparantly do not
answer email. The price of the CD with all the Final series of products is
suggested retail at $100US which is less than FW costs by itself. They had
preorder discounts on the CD before it was supposedly pressed... but that
also is past date now.
If you check the webpage it tells all about this.

I don't want to buy the FinalOffice1.0 CD because I've bought FW97.
I only buy my software here in Germany. Softpartners should know that there
is a need for updates without buying the stuff that many users already
have.

Can anyone tell me how to make the "blank" page in FW be the full screen

1024/768.
I have tried saving as default, etc, but it doesn't seem to work; or I
missed something. ;)

Presuming you are using FW97 the following should help.
You can set the resolution of the startup screen from the Preferences
in the Project menu. Select the Startup tab and click the required
screen option and the number of colours required. Also select the Open
new Screen button from the screen type list.
If you want to set the default size of the page and window for
startup and for new documents you must do this from the View Menu.
Firstly stretch your document window to the full size of your
screen then select Preferences from the View menu and click the
Display Tab. You can select the required level of page zoom with the
Magnify gadget and then click the Save As Default box in the Window
Size gadget and select save. This should sort out your problem but you
might like to experiment with various Screen DPI combinations as shown
on the Display Tab to fine tune your screen display.
I hope this helps,

I´m not an experienced user with FinalWriter but I made two columns like
you said and took the thames4.font. Copied the text into the clipboard two
times and duplicated it and as result I have this text four times on my A4-Page.
Didn´t think I would get it like this :-)
The printing on my HP-Deskjet is not that fine, maybe I find a better
delicate little font an try it again. Thanks for your help!

Hello Morten
Well, one of us is still here.
I am looking for a very small program for Final Writer (or any Amiga
program) which will print font samples in the following manner:
**********************************************
Font : `name of font' (Outline, for example)
Size : 14, 18, 26, 34,
Sample Printout - - - - - -alphabet or whatever
**********************************************
I had something once about a million years ago, but the program has
disappeared. PageStream has something for its own fonts but it is not the
same thing. I would like to print the woorkbench fonts. Anyone have
something?

Try this:
http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/pub/aminet/text/font/FontList.lha
Short: Prints list of fonts in FONTS: device
Author: Robert Brandner
Source: Fish collection
Prints a list of the fonts in the FONTS: device to the printer.
Prints
name, available sizes and some text using the specified font.

I have a file from Aminet (Softwood area) that is called MFontList.lha. It
is supposed to do what you want. I have never used it though. If you can't

Sorry for the gibberish. I believe I was using MS Outlook Express,
which I don't think I've ever used to post email before. Must be
some problem in the way I have it currently configured. I'll look into
it later, for now I'll continue using my regular email program.Netscape
Communicator's Composer.
My original post was as follows:
Could someone tell me what the very last version of FinalWriter is? Is it
FinalWriter '97? Also, does anyone have the latest version of FinalWriter
for sale? I prefer the full commercial edition, complete with printed
manuals, etc.
Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give me.

Richard, MS Word is a binary file. You can load it into FW and take out the
binary info. The text should be there. You are right, if it is tables or such
formated info, you will not be able to get it in that format.

Rich,
You can probably read it, but it won't be very pretty. I just loaded a
.doc file containing 2-1/2 pages of actual plain text. The plain text
was preceded by a half page of garbage and followed by another 8 pages
of garbage. Actually, what I'm calling "garbage" is stuff that MS Word
apparently uses to keep track of fonts, format, etc.

You can try, but do not expect miracles. You MIGHT be able to identify
fragments of words here and there, and LOTS of odd characters and codes and
spaces elsewhere. FW97 does not support Word nor any other PC word processor
document formats. It would be nice if there were a plugin for other document
formats... AREXX maybe? Of course even better would be an updated
FinalWriter with that built-in.
If you are lucky that ".doc" file might be plain text, but until you look at
it you won't know. If it is indeed a Word ",doc" there are Word document
converters on Aminet. Good luck! :)

You should try "CatDoc" from Aminet!
It converts doc-files (from word) to plain-ASCII, so you are able to import
the text.

I've done it many times. Just load it into FW, then erase the top junk and
the bottom junk. All the text should be there. I have only had a problem
once.

Hi Richard
No, you can not load a Word document into Final Writer. Look for a
utility on aminet called WordConverter. It will convert the document
to ASCII tekst which can be loaded into Final Writer.

I wonder if that could be modified to print fonts from the FW fonts
directory. I've always done it manually! I have pages and pages of sample
texts for nearly all of my FW fonts. Comes in very handy when I'm looking
for a specific "look" in a font.

Opening foreign documents
Final Writer can open documents created in WordPerfect,
ProWrite, and PenPal. You open a document created in any of
these word processors just as you open documents created in Final
Writer. There is no conversion process that you are required to do.
When you instruct Final Writer to open a document, it checks to see
who created the document. If the document was created in one of
the above word processors, Final Writer automatically converts it to
a Final Writer document as it is opened. Warning, if you save the
document, it will be saved as a Final Writer document. Therefore, if
you want to retain the document in its original format, you should
make a copy of it before opening it in Final Writer.

Unfortunately, I doubt it. But actually it probably will,
but it won't all be readable. You'll probably get some
text out of it, but there will quite a few control
characters interspersed through the file.

You know, if Consultron (the makers of CrossMAC and CrossDOS) is still
in biz, or someone like them, perhaps they might see the $$$ potential
in creating a CrossWORD program! Many times I've had to load the file
in FW on the PeeCee and then save as Amiga version, and then reload it
on the Ami. I never thought about what to do if I got it thru e-mail
on the Ami... Hmmm. I guess you cold always e-mail it to yourself
(sorry, it's not meant to be a joke, I actually have done that
with pictures... *sigh*)

Hi ALL!
A question about the possibility in FinalWriter to use two or more columns.
I want to write a little handbook about bees and honey. Using a HP-Deskjet
with german DIN A4-Format (similar to US-letter-size) I thought I can use
two columns to write and format the text and after that fold the pages in
the middle to have the half size, put it together with some clamps? and
give it as an addition to the honey I sell.
The pages should be printed on both sides so I can bind them together.
Can one use the possibility to write in two columns therefore or is this
just a flop in FinalWriter? I know I have to develop my own concept for the
kind of binding the manual but it seems the columns-feature in FinalWriter
is not that simple to use for the binding of pages printed in front
and back.
Any suggestions?
Regards

I also have been frustrated to load and then read MS Word files in FW. Lo and
behold, this morning I found in the Aminet files a program "WordComverter". I
have only tried one file conversion and it work just perfect. It will convert to
ASCII, HTML or AmigaGuide. It is fast, comes from Poland, is shareware and worth
the $15.00.I have also tried to use the other programs suggested here
previously, none works as well and is simple to use like WordConverter. Try it,
you might like it.

Those are all AMIGA word processors. Only WordPerfect is also a
PC-compatible program, but I wouldn't expect any version of the PC
WordPerfect documents newer than the last Amiga version to work in
FinalWriter. I doubt many if any versions THAT old are still in use :)

So any news about the fate of SoftPartners? Are they alive or did they die
before they even got started? What became of those CDs that were supposed
pressed last fall of FinalOffice 1.0? I'd really like a new version of
FinalWriter.

AFAIK Consultron are alive and well. CrossDOS7.0 Gold is a great product
released last year.
There are several program on Aminet now that can convert Word Docs to text,
and some even handle other PC and Amiga word processor document formats.
Does WordWorth (yeah the competition) import Word docs natively?

Andreas,
I think you will find what you are trying to accomplish is a royal
pain on the patookus with the column feature. When I have used the column
feature I have found that it starts in the upper left hand corner, works its
way down the left side and when you hit the bottom of the first page,
continues to the right column. Where you will run into trouble is when you
go to multiple pages. All the handbooks I have seen work like this: laying
a sheet of paper down, you have page one on the left side. We will ignore
the right side for now. Lay another sheet down, and on the left underside
is page two, topside is page three. Another sheet is laid down, with the
underside being page four, and the top being page five. Now move to the
right side of the top sheet. This would be page six with the underside of
it being page seven. Below that you have page eight topside and page nine
on the underside. The sheet on the bottom faceup is page ten. I assume the
bottom face of the very first page is a title type page. So what do we
have?
Sheet# Face/Column Page# Face/column Page#
1 up/left 1 Up/right 10
2 down/left 2 down/right 9
2 up/left 3 up/right 8
3 down/left 4 down/right 7
3 up/left 5 up/right 6
As you can see, it is going to be a pain to print. What I suggest is that
you figure out how many sheets it is going to be, lay them out, folding as
needed, and number the pages so you can see what page is on what sheet and
where it's located. Then type the information into FinalWriter as text
blocks. The reason behind that is you can continue a block (or is a clip? I
can never remember the right term without the manual in front of me) on a
different page and by making the blocks half the width of the page, you can
'columnize' it.

Regards

Andreas,
I distinctly remember some sort of utility (not for FW) that would sort and
separate pages for you solely for folded book styles. Wonder if there is one
for FW? Of course, as it is, your columns would be useless as you said, but
you could have a page that was half the size of the paper you are using (I've
done this before. For smaller books, I have manually gone through and set the
columns in order (Ack!). Then someone showed me a collating copier. My life
then became truly blessed <G>

I agree, what you really need is a pagesetter, PageStream would ofcourse
do the job, I can offer you a possible solution. I think I have a
PostScript program which can do wonders on PostScript code making multiple
sides on on sheet, rotating, make booklets which then get correct page
orientation and placement. However you would need either a PostScript
printer or TurboPrint v7 in order to print the PostScript file.
Please email me in private if this sounds interessting.

Kipling, in FW Project Preference check what your settings are for ASCII Input

I am assuming by your text here that the use of text frames is needed
to use the Left/Right margin settings. Is this correct?

I was only trying to point out that there is at least limited support
for cross platform use.
Keep in mind that Final Writer 97 will read and write in RTF format
also. I think RTF is an acranym for `ReTargetableFormat'. I believe
all modern wordprocessors support RTF.
RTF works well if you need to transfer text only documents.
I have experimented with emailing my brother RTF files from FinalWriter
and he has had no problems reading them with his Windows machine.
With RTF in mind, does anyone have good RTF font settings they could
share? I dont have access to a windows box to see what fonts are
similar between Final Writer and Word or the like.
(For those who dont know: The setting of the fonts is not necessary to
use RTF as Final Writer will use the default font if none are set)

Yes, I worked out a similar concept for bothside printing. The terrible
thing is, my FinalWriter Version4.02 disturbes the left and right
pagesettings every time I insert or change some words or sentences. I
have to reformat the whole document every time from the beginning.
With my concept I wanted to write the pages from number one to the middle
of the handbook at first, means one column of every page is empty. After
that I wanted to write from the end to the middle of the document. The big
prblem here is that I cannot change from Insertmode to Overwritemode and so
the whole formating is gone again.

Seems, you are right. After writing every page and knowing how big the
document will be at last I could open a new sheet and insert the single
blocks clip by clip.... hmmm... very good. I shall try this.
What I don´t understand is the feature in FinalWriter to have the
possibility of working with left and right pages when one is at least not
able to print and bind it together in a reasonable way. ;)
All right Sheridan, thanks for your help. I shall come up again when I get
non soluble problems.
BTW in landscape-printing my deskjet shows some ugly terms....

MW Try Amiga dealers. They may still have some FinalWriter97 copies on the

Try Amiga dealers. They may still have some FinalWriter97 copies on the
shelf. Try SoftwareHut:1-800-93-AMIGA, CompuQuick:1-614-235-1180,
SafeHarbor:1-800-544-6599 or your local/near-local Amiga dealer. If you need
webpage or email addresses for the above I can send them too. but a quick
phone call will tell you if any of the 3 above dealers have it. You might
also ask about Final Office 1.0 which contains FW97, FinalData, FinalCalc,
FW(Win95), and a clipart collection for around the price Fw97 sold for last
year alone. AFAIK there are no demo versions of FW, and if their were I'm
sure they would be limited to no saving or printing, etc.

Oh yeah. FW97 only ships on diskettes, but FinalOffice if it ever shipped
was supposed to be CD only.

Robert, text frames do not depend on L/R margin setting. Your margin setting fixes
your edit area.- (never to be larger than print margins of your printer)- . If
you want to have left and right pages, as in a book where the larger margin is
on the inside, tick Left/Right in Page-set-up. Reference Pages 2-12, 4-6, 7-32
in FW Manual.
Unfortunately I have not reached the instructor level. I am an autodidact in
Final Writer and that is dangerous.

Before you open a document goto the menu project/preferences. Choose the
ASCII tab. Uncheck the first entry and save the setting.
Sorry for that bad description. I have FW97 german version.

Actually, there WAS a Copy of FW lite (without Speller, Thesaurus, etc...)> I
received off of a Magazine Coverdisk, and heard it was (WAS) on SW'w WebSite.
Not too shabby, it was not 'quite' fw97,... But it was great for a lowmem

Thanks for the tip.
I wish I understood PS fonts better. Some are binary files and others
are ascii files. Guess I'll have to read the manual and see if it will
shed some light.

Ok :) But the original poster wanted to import what he thought was a MS Word
".doc" document.

Great. RTF is a very good means to transfer files across platforms to
retain basic document layout more so than a plain ASCII text file :)

There's an ARexx script called FontDetail.rexx that will generate the
complete character set using the current font. I believe it came in one of
those macro collections from Aminet. I'm not sure what the collection is
called, but if you like I could explore and get that for you. I always just
downloaded all the macros that had anything to do with FW.
This script is very good, I use it to print out all the fonts that were not
in the FW manual.

To All:
Have been following this thread for some days. Below are two macros I
wrote a couple of years ago which some may find useful. Both print a
document on both sides, number the pages, and come out of the printer ready
to staple. For bookwriting purposes and your specific printer, they may
need modification. Suggest a test run before you try anything major.

MW Actually if you install PS Type 1 or True Type Fonts you can use the
MW same fonts as PC users.
Okay, how hard is it to install PS Type 1 or True Type Fonts???

I`ve seen a cover disk version but can`t seem to get my hands on it. Web
site addresses would be the most useful though, since calling UK to USA
tends to be a little expensive for a poor student like me!
Cheers,
Craig

That's why e-mail is a great service:) Within a few days you can get an
answer about a product.
If I recall FinalWriter 4 Lite was also a product for sale at a smaller cost
than the version4 that was shipping at the time. After FW4 there was FW5,
FW6, then FW97.
Here are the email/URLs for the 3 US dealers I mentioned in an earlier post.

From Aminet grab type.library and ttf.library and voila you can use PS Type
1 and True Type Fonts in any Amiga application that can use CompuGraphic
outline fonts :) If you get TTF.library from Aminet look at the docs and get
the newest library from the support site as it is newer than the version on
Aminet.
It is quit simple after you install the libraries. Download some fonts
offline or buy some.... or if you bought a printer in the past 4 or 5 years
you probably have some floppies or a CD with TTF fonts on them. There are
also websites with TTF and/or PS Type 1 fonts.

Thank you for offering your help. But after a lot of work and patience
and %å@°&% I have the little book built together with FinalWriter.
I printed it out with my Deskjet after playing around with the options
in TurboPrint and it locks perfect :-)
Is there a demoversion of PageStream somewhere?
I want to thank everybody who gave me some help with this!
BTW I´m looking for some pictures about bees... I have a lot of CD´s
here, but can´t find anything about this little nice flies.
Regards
